A-Series conversion
By popular request we've
been investigating the possibilities of a bolt-on kit for
your A-series engine. The obvious choice is a Jenvey throttle
body which fits any proprietary Weber inlet manifold. Though
more expensive, this makes for a much more straightforward
conversion when compared with the use of motorcycle throttle
bodies.
For the
kit to be worthwhile, it had to make more power, give better
driveability and improved economy over any carburettor installation.
With the Canems ECU, this has proved to be possible in all
respects; with back-to-back tests against a 45DCOE.
The photograph
below shows an installation on a Mini engine, although the
prototype setup has proved effective on the road and has
been rolling-road tested on an inline A-Series fitted to
an Austin Healey Sprite.

report
To keep you updated... this
is the engine installed in the Frogeye Sprite we've been
testing it in. It's now covered a couple of thousand miles
with no bother at all. The two most noticeable improvements
have been driveability around town (no stalling / blipping
the throttle at junctions) and fuel economy. As you'd expect
from a fully-managed engine, the power is smooth in delivery
from idle up to the rev limiter.

We're extremely
happy with the performance of this engine now, so we're
moving on to the ultimate. 1380cc full race engine, 300
degree cam and (hopefully) around 140bhp from a five-port
head. To be classed a success, this project will need to
improve hillclimb times, so it'll be a test of all round
driveability and not just ultimate power. To generate this
power we're experimenting with four fuel injectors and individual
bike throttle bodies...
